Wild Beauty, Calm Soul: A Journey Through Banff
Birthday to Remember: Surprising My Husband with the Rockies Mountains!
For my husband’s birthday this year, I wanted to do something more than just dinner and cake. I wanted a memory — something unforgettable, peaceful, beautiful, and just for the two of us. So, I planned a surprise trip to Calgary, Canada in May, and I have to say: it turned out even more magical than I imagined. I was able to keep the destination a secret until we were boarding the flight! The look on his face when I told him we were heading in Calgary was priceless. Once we landed, we were greeted in true VIP fashion — a chauffeur was waiting for us at the airport, ready to whisk us away to the city in comfort and style. No waiting for taxis, no fumbling with directions — just a calm, luxurious ride straight to our hotel.
We checked into the Hilton Garden Inn in Downtown Calgary, a sleek, welcoming hotel with everything we needed for a relaxing stay. This hotel is perfect for pick up and drop off for Tour Guides and walking distance to restaurants and shops. The only issue to keep is mind that Calgary has a huge homeless problem and the homeless shelter is right next door - Keep that in mind!
The following morning, we were picked up for an all-day tour with our tour guide, Winston, and a small group of just 10–12 people — which made the experience feel much more personal and intimate. Winston greeted us with a warm smile and immediately set the tone for the day with fun facts, stories, and a deep knowledge of the area. We rode in a clean, spacious private van, and he took care of everything — driving, timing, recommendations, and even jokes. Our first stop: Lake Minnewanka. The water was still chilly, but the lake shimmered under the clear sky like glass. From there, Winston surprised us with a stop at one of Banff’s hidden gems — a gorgeous waterfall tucked just outside the town. We stopped in Banff for a few hours — not just for sightseeing but for shopping, wandering, and of course, a delicious lunch (Eddie’s Burgers, YOU MUST TRY). The town feels like something out of a storybook: alpine-style buildings, cozy cafés, and a background of towering peaks.
The next part of the tour was the true highlight. Lake Louise was as stunning as I’d seen in photos — the colors are unreal. The lake, framed by rugged mountains, was still partially frozen but glowing in shades of blue and green; the icy blue water framed by snowcapped mountains. And then came Moraine Lake, a surreal turquoise jewel that left us both speechless. We had plenty of time to walk, take photos, and just breathe in the fresh, pine-scented air. It was peaceful and awe-inspiring in the best way.
After our incredible day exploring Banff, we decided to slow things down and stay local in Downtown Calgary the next day. We started our morning with a visit to the Calgary Tower, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Riding the elevator to the top, we were greeted with 360-degree panoramic views of the city skyline, the winding Bow River, and — in the distance — those same majestic Rockies we had explored the day before. Standing on the glass floor was a little nerve-wracking at first, but it quickly turned into a moment of laughter and amazement. It gave us a new perspective, literally and figuratively — seeing the city from above felt like the perfect pause after such a nature-filled day.
We wandered into a cozy, modern café known for its organic, locally sourced menu — and it ended up being one of the most memorable meals of the trip. My husband went for the Korean-style chicken and waffles, which took the classic dish to a whole new level. The crispy chicken had a perfectly balanced gochujang glaze — a little spicy, a little sweet — paired with airy waffles and a drizzle of maple syrup. It was bold, unexpected, and so delicious. I ordered the French toast topped with fresh local berries, and it was exactly what I needed: soft, golden slices with just the right amount of crunch on the edges, smothered in seasonal Alberta strawberries and blueberries, finished with whipped cream and a light dusting of cinnamon. Every bite tasted like spring.
The highlight of the day, and honestly one of the most surprising parts of the trip, was our visit to the Calgary Stampede Museum. We went in curious… and left completely inspired. The museum is beautifully done, but what made it truly special was one of the volunteers who took time to walk with us and share stories. His passion for the Stampede culture — the history, the people, the traditions — was contagious. We learned how the Calgary Stampede isn’t just an event; it’s a legacy. It’s a celebration of Western values, ranching life, community, and resilience. Seeing the old rodeo gear, costumes, and watching archived footage made everything come alive. I don’t think either of us expected to feel so moved by cowboy boots and rodeo stories, but we left with a whole new appreciation for Alberta’s wild, authentic spirit.
Just when we thought the trip couldn’t get any more adventurous, Day 3 brought a whole new level of wonder. We booked our second guided tour — this time with Param, a passionate and incredibly knowledgeable guide who led us on a journey deeper into the Canadian Rockies.
Our first stop was the breathtaking Bow Lake. The water shimmered with a deep, icy blue, perfectly reflecting the towering peaks around it. It was calm, quiet, and simply stunning.
Then came one of our favorite experiences: hiking through snow and ice to reach the best view of Peyto Lake. It felt like a true mountain adventure — crunching through frozen trails with the crisp alpine air around us. And when we reached the viewpoint? Absolutely worth every step. The famous wolf-head shape of Peyto Lake was unmistakable, and seeing it in person was surreal. We made a quick stop at the Waterfowl Lake Viewpoints, and although it's not as widely known, it was one of those quiet, reflective moments. The stillness of the lake, framed by endless forest and mountain ridges, felt like a hidden gem in the heart of the Rockies.
Then came the ultimate highlight of the day — the Columbia Icefield Glacier Adventure. We boarded a specially designed Ice Explorer vehicle and made our way out onto the Athabasca Glacier, part of the massive Columbia Icefield. Stepping onto the glacier, feeling the cold air and standing atop centuries-old ice, was absolutely unforgettable.
Our guide explained the science, the history, and the environmental importance of the glacier. And just knowing we were walking on ice that has existed for thousands of years added a sense of awe and gratitude. Next, we visited the Glacier Skywalk — a glass-floored observation deck that stretches out over the Sunwapta Valley. Standing on the edge, with the canyon below and snow-capped peaks all around, was equal parts thrilling and breathtaking. It felt like floating above the world. Just when we thought the day was winding down, Param surprised us with one last, perfect stop: a second visit to Lake Louise. Seeing it again — now from a different light and perspective — made it even more special. The lake seemed to shimmer differently this time, quieter and more intimate. It felt like a full-circle moment.
